Modelling glossary

Go-sees, tear sheets, options, buyouts, digitals. Every term, explained in one line.

Who it's forAnyone new to the industry's language.

What you'll be able to do

  • Plain one-line definitions
  • Search as you type
  • Links from each term to the lesson that covers it
  • Regional terms marked where usage differs

Step by step

  1. Search a word you have just heard
  2. Read the short definition and an example
  3. Follow the link to the full lesson if you need more

How it will work

A searchable page that grows as lessons are added.

A few entries (draft)

  • Comp card: a card with your headshot, a few other pictures, your measurements and contact or agency details
  • Digitals: simple, unretouched photos agencies ask for to see what you look like today
  • Go-see: a short meeting with a client or photographer so they can meet you
  • Tear sheet: a page from a published job featuring your work
  • Option: a provisional hold on your dates for a possible booking
  • Usage: where, how and for how long the pictures from a job can be used
  • Buyout: a fee paid for a defined use of the pictures
  • TFP: an unpaid collaboration where everyone gives time in exchange for pictures
  • Mother agency: the agency that first develops a model and may place them with agencies elsewhere

Why it matters

Jargon makes beginners easier to mislead. Knowing the words is the first step to asking the right questions.

Honest limits

  • Definitions are general; contracts and local practice vary
  • Not legal advice

Before it goes live

  • Definitions checked and sourced
  • Regional differences noted
